They appear "masculine" because they are older women who have lived lives of incredible hardship that is beyond comprehension for those of us in the Western world. These are women that have endured years of backbreaking labor to provide for their families, not to mention the abuse they put up with simply because they had the misfortune to be born in a third world country. They are likely stronger and tougher than most men in Western countries, and their status and beauty as women is not lessened because of it.
